The Ethiopian International Institute for peace and Development( EIIPD) has provided training to senior government executives, directors and middle level managers drawn from the public and Private sectors as well as civil society.

1. Leadership Training  

This category of training programme was provided to ministers, state ministers, vice ministers, commissioners, parliamentarians, regional presidents, heads of regional bureaus etc.  

The Institute has organized the following training programs for the said officials: 

  1. International Negotiation Techniques

  2. Management By Objectives (management for results) with its computer tool - ProMIS

  3. Strategic Management

  4. Management Planning and Delegation

  5. The Asian Tigers Development Experience (Malaysia, Singapore and others)

  6. Decentralization and the Federal Process at Work 

 2  Capacity Building for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs  

  1. Training for newly appointed Ambassadors

  2. Training for other newly assigned diplomats

  3. Training for new recruits

  4. In-service (request based) training including:

3  Regular Capacity Building Programmes  

This training was given in two categories viz

  1. Capacity building for different ministries including the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, other Ministries, Commissions, Parliament and Regional Administrations.

  2. Capacity building via awareness generation for public, private and civil society groups ¾ the bridging function. 

4  Content and Syllabus of Training Programmes 

Example of the syllabus on courses in International Relations, Diplomacy and Diplomatic Communication:  

  • International Communication skills English for diplomacy

       - Concepts in International Law,

  •  Sector Policies and Performance

      - Reform and Performance of Agriculture,

The courses in IR, Diplomacy and Diplomatic Communication have a duration of 16 - 24 weeks and the trainees are drawn from different ministries including the Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Institute conducts this training program on a regular basis.   

The purpose of the training programmes is the need to foster and enhance knowledge and skills on the last word in the best practices in international relations and the status of Ethiopia in the aforesaid sectors. The ultimate aim of this is to make Ethiopian diplomats conversant with the rules and norms of international diplomacy.

5  Evaluation and Feedback 

The EIIPD is both a teaching and learning Institution. In line with this it ensures that the training programmes are slated to the needs of the trainees.  This is done via appropriate planning and evaluations.  Evaluations of the training programmes are conducted in the wake of the training and during the end of the programme.  

The goal of each evaluation is to garner critical and constructive feedback and to plough it into future training programs.

6. Workshops and Seminars for Capacity Building  

A total of 39 workshops and seminars each with an average duration of ten days were conducted and 3500 participants benefited from the programs.  The core seminars and workshops included: 

  1. Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Immunity,

  2. Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills-four rounds,

  3. Financial Deregulation and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) two rounds,

  4. Seminar on Regional Security in North East Africa,

  5. Value for Money and Financial Audit,

  6. Non-Navigational uses of International Watercourses,

  7. Multilateral Development Institutions in Ethiopia: two rounds

  8. European Union and Africa from Lomé to Cotonou,

  9. Human Rights and Civic Responsibility three rounds

  10. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) two rounds,

  11. Ethiopian Admission to the WTO - the Experience of China and Thailand,

  12. 100 years of Ethio-US Relations,

  13. NEPAD in the Context of Ethiopia's National Policy.

7.  Implementation of MBO - ProMIS
