Enhancing Knowledge Base and Skills Demanded by Diplomacy in the Third Millennium

Since the establishment as a capacity building organization over 10 years ago, the EIIPD has carried out programmes aimed at enhancing the knowledge base and skills required by Ethiopian’s diplomacy in the third millennium.

The specific tasks in this respect included:

  • Dissemination of research outputs on peace and security issues of concern to Ethiopia and its vicinity 
  • Seminars and workshops to upgrade the competence, the skills and communicative  proficiency of civil servants with attachment to, and interest in, the diplomatic service of the country.

In depth examination of the EIIPD’s research experience and the accumulated resources is underway to articulate ways and means of enlivening the institute as a center of excellence.  

 Diplomatic training is a core pre-occupation of the EIIPD, which is currently reviewing the experiences of its diplomatic training.

 In the EIIPD is to make a meaningful contribution to human resources capacity building in the field of diplomacy, it is necessary to draw up and articulate relevant content, orientation and extent of training in ways that reflect the realities of the 21st century diplomacy. This is to say that the EIIPD in the process of revising its syllabus to revamp the training package with the emerging concerns of the international scene

 

In the meantime, some training seminars are being conducted on technical themes that have relevance to diplomacy. Among these is training on Protocol and Etiquette, Conference organization, Norms of Diplomatic Intercourse and Communication, which was conducted at the headquarters of the institute from 10-14 March 2008.

The interactive five-day training seminar covered activity –based protocol and Etiquette teaching guides which addressed: 

  • Social Skills
  • Communication skills
  • Ceremonial Protocol
  • Business Etiquette
  • Introduction Etiquette
  • Handshaking Etiquette
  • Conversation Etiquette
  • Customer Service Etiquette
  • Dining Etiquettes and Table Manners
  • Office and Telephone Etiquette
  • Rules, Procedures and practices of Conference organization

Diplomatic privileges and Immunities and case Studies on violation, and abuse of the privileged diplomatic staff members.

 

The trainers, Ato Mogus Teklemicahel, Acting Director General of the institute and Ato Tesfaye Hailemariam , the Former Chief of protocol of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Career Diplomat, Conducted the seminar with active participation of the trainees in case analysis , role play and constructive discussions on all the topics.

   

The participants of the seminar were from the AU, Ethiopian Airport Enterprises, The Commercial and Development Banks of Ethiopia, Ethiopian Insurance Corporation and the Federal Ethics and Anti Corruption commission.
