Mission of the EIIPD

The Ethiopian International Institute for Peace and Development (EIIPD) is an autonomous research, capacity-building, training, networking and think-tank institution. It was established in 1996 pursuant to the Council of Ministers Regulation 5/1996. The objectives, powers and duties of the institution are stated in article 5 and 6 of the institution respectively. According to article 5 of the regulation, the institution has the following objectives:  

  1. Undertaking research and training activities designed to promote cooperation and partnership between Ethiopia and the international community with a view to further ensuring strict observance of democratic and human rights guaranteed to all citizens by the Constitution, further strengthening of the prevailing peace and stability and enhancing the progress of economic and social development;

  2. Contributing  towards strengthening relations among countries of the Horn of Africa based on mutual trust and respect and through promotion and assistance in research activities and the provision of conceptual and practical support through on-going training programmes;

  3. Exploring  the potential for future enhancement of security, stability and socio-economic development in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa through promotion and assistance in research activities and the provision of conceptual and practical support through on-going training programmes; and

  4.  Promoting cooperation between countries of the Horn of Africa and the international community with a view to strengthening the latter’s assistance and support in building sustainable peace and development in the region, a well as promoting the creation and expansion of relation, based on mutual benefits.

Further, the powers and duties of the institution which as delineated in article 6 of the regulation are to:

  1. Conduct and disseminate policy-option studies on issues related to peace and development;

  2. Review the implementation and application of policies and principles pertaining to the building of democratic institutions, the observance of human rights, the maintenance of peace and security relating to foreign relations and cooperation as well as economic and social development with a view to proposing and disseminating alternative methods of implement-tation;

  3. Undertake research and studies and conduct trainings designed to promote democratic culture and handling of differences through peaceful and democratic debate, ensure the strict observance of democracy governance characterized by account-ability, transparency and public confidence, and promote the expansion and strengthening of democratic institutions;

  4. Collect and analyze information on issues relating to peace and development, and to disseminate them to those concerned;

  5. Contribute and assist in the peaceful resolution of conflicts arising at national or regional levels;

  6. Conduct training programmes designed to promote sustainable peace and development with particular emphasis on peaceful methods of conflict resolution and peace-keeping;

  7. Sponsor special forums such as seminars, workshops, symposia and conferences to share in-depth knowledge and practical experience;

  8. Establish relations of cooperation with governmental and international agencies, non-governmental organi-zations and institutions having similar goals;

  9. Publish and distribute the results of its studies and research activities;

  10. Accept assistance and donations in connection with the fulfillment of its objectives;

  11. Fix and collect fees, as may be necessary, for the service the Institute  renders;

  12. Own property, enter into contracts and to sue and be sued in its own name; and

  13.  Carry out such other activities as may be necessary for the fulfillment of its objectives.

All in all, the EIIPD offers trainings, seminars and symposia which are:

  •  custom-made and demand driven; 

  •    applied in character and orientation;

  • Ethio-centric in content;

  • Centered on participatory planning which aims to accommodate the specialized needs and expectation of individual trainees’

  • based on inbuilt evaluation mechanism at mid-term and at the end of each module and cycle of training which provides an opportunity for ploughing in the trainee feedback’ and

  •       geared toward performing a bridging role between the public sector on the one hand and the private sector and civil society on the other
